Mr Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe was the Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa from 11 May 2009 to 25 May 2014.

Mr Kgalema Petrus Motlanthe was the President of the Republic of South Africa from 25 September 2008 to 9 May 2009.

As the Deputy President, in addition to any other functions that the President may assign to him, he has the following responsibilities :- Mr Motlanthe is the leader of Government Business in the National Assembly. He is the leader of the Anti-Poverty Programme. He serves as a Chairperson of the Energy Advisory Council. He is the Chairperson of the Human Resource Development Council. Mr Motlanthe is the Chairperson of the South African National Aids Council and in the International Relations and Co-operation.

 

In the 1970s, while working for the Johannesburg City Council, he was recruited into Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), the then armed wing of the ANC. Overview

The cabinet of South Africa consists of the president, deputy president, and ministers.[2] The president appoints the deputy president and ministers, assigns the ministers’ powers and functions, and may dismiss them.[3] The deputy president must be a member of the National Assembly.[4]

The president may select any number of ministers. The ministers must be selected from the members of the National Assembly, with the exception that up to two ministers may be selected from outside the assembly.[5] The deputy president and ministers may be from various political parties, reflecting the outcomes of the general election or coalition agreements.
