Ann LennoxOBE (born 25 December 1954) is a Scottish singer-songwriter, political activist and philanthropist. After achieving moderate success in the late 1970s as part of the new wave band the Tourists, she and fellow musician Dave Stewart went on to achieve international success in the 1980s as Eurythmics. Appearing in the 1983 music video for "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" with orange cropped hair and wearing a man's lounge suit, the BBC wrote, "all eyes were on Annie Lennox, the singer whose powerful androgynous look defied the male gaze". Subsequent hits with Eurythmics include "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)", "Love Is a Stranger" and "Here Comes the Rain Again".

Lennox embarked on a solo career in 1992 with her debut album, Diva, which produced several hit singles including "Why" and "Walking on Broken Glass". The same year, she performed "Love Song for a Vampire" for Bram Stoker's Dracula. Her 1995 studio album Medusa includes cover versions of songs such as "No More 'I Love You's'" and "A Whiter S

You were born in Aberdeen on Christmas Day 1954. What were your parents like?

They had been teenagers during the war, when Aberdeen was bombed. My father worked in the shipyards for years – he followed my grandfather into an apprenticeship – and then he went off to work on the railway.

Did they have any religious belief?

No, on my father’s side none whatsoever. But going to the countryside, to the village where my mother’s parents lived, we would go to church on Sunday because that was what people did. I don’t really know what my parents’ spiritual beliefs would have been.

I’ve read that your father was rather over-protective.

Well, yeah, I was a girl and I was an only child, and so I think that was very natural. My father came from a fairly rigid background… I always have to contextualise my parents, because it’s really not fair to take them at face value, if you see what I mean.

Annie Lennox was born on December 25, 1954, in Aberdeen, Scotland. Her parents are Dorothy Ferguson and Thomas Lenox.

Education

As a teenager, Annie Lennox attended the Aberdeen High School for Girls. By this time, she had already spent several years learning how to play music. She had begun taking piano lessons in primary school, and her love for music had carried on into her high school years.

After graduating from high school, Annie Lennox went to on attending the Royal Academy of Music, London. While at this school, she was a member of a few small bands.




Music Career

After graduating from college, Annie Lennox went on to play the flute in the band, Dragon's Playground for a short time before helping to form the band, The Tourists, in 1976. Other members of this band included David Stewart, Peet Coombes, Eddie Chin, and Jim Toomey. The band released their first album, The Tourists, in 1979.
