Dilma Rousseff
Dilma Vana Rousseff served as the president of Brazil from January 1, 2011 to August, 31, 2016. She was the first woman to hold that office.
Rousseff was born on December 14, 1947, in Belo Horizonte, the state capital of Minas Gerais. She received her primary education at the traditional Nossa Senhora de Sion School and her secondary education at the State Central High School in Belo Horizonte, then a hub of student activism. At the age of 16, she began her political career, taking part in movements against the military regime that ruled Brazil from 1964 to 1985.
In 1969, Rousseff met her future husband Carlos Franklin Paixão de Araújo, a lawyer from Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil's southernmost state. Together, they suffered persecution under the military regime. In 1970, Rousseff was arrested and spent almost three years in a penitentiary in the city of São Paulo. An investigation dubbed Operation Car Wash has uncovered evidence that Brazil's biggest construction firms overcharged Petrobras for building contracts.
Part of their windfall was then handed to Petrobras executives and politicians who were in on the deal.
Prosecutors allege that Ms Rousseff's Workers' Party partly financed its campaigns and expenses through these kickbacks.
A number of high-ranking politicians from the Workers' Party - and other parties - have been convicted over the scandal.
President Rousseff insists she had no knowledge of any wrongdoing.
But her critics, who point to the fact that Ms Rousseff served on the board of directors of Petrobras from 2003 to 2010, say they find this hard to believe.
Ms Rousseff's second term has been further hampered by economic woes, including falling oil prices, rising unemployment and a recession.

The presidency of Dilma Rousseff began on 1 January 2011 with Dilma Vana Rousseff's inauguration as president after defeating PSDB candidate José Serra in the 2010 elections, and ended with her impeachment on 31 August 2016, already in her second term.[1][2][3][4]
The period was historic because it was the first time a woman had held the Presidency of the Republic in Brazil.[5][6] Initially, the government had 37 ministries in the first term and 39 in the second term, the largest number of ministries since redemocratization in 1985.[7][8][9]
In her first months in office, Dilma contradicted the desire of sectors of her own party to regulate the press and declared that "a free media is essential for democracy".[10] Dilma's second term was marked by a serious economic and political crisis in the country, with GDP per capita shrinking by more than 9% between 2014 and 2016.
