John Stobart’s start in life was quite unexpected. His mother died when she was seven months pregnant, making her unborn child’s chance of survival uncertain. Nonetheless, the baby lived, and soon joined his older brother George (1927-2005) and his father in their modest home in Allestree, an attractive village north of the county town of Derby, England. During Stobart’s youth, Derby was a railroad hub as well as home to the Rolls Royce Company, which designed the Merlin aircraft engine for the Spitfire and Hurricane planes made famous in World War II. Dr. Kent StobartDr. Stobart was born in Thunder Bay, Ontario and raised in Toronto, Ontario. He holds an undergraduate BSc degree from Trinity College and received his medical degree from the University of Toronto. He completed his postgraduate training in the Family Medicine Residency Program at the Université d’Ottawa and practiced as a family physician in Peterborough, Ontario. Dr. Stobart completed Royal College Fellowships in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at The University of British Columbia. He was awarded a Terry Fox Research Scholarship to complete a Master’s of Science in Epidemiology with a special focus on program evaluation, with the Clinical Trials Group of the National Cancer Institute of Canada. Dr. Stobart has practiced as a pediatric oncologist at CancerCare Manitoba and most recently with the Northern Alberta Children’s Cancer Program at Stollery Children’s Hospital.
