It gives us great pleasure to extend our warmest congratulations to Tan Sri Dato’ Seri DiRaja Ramli bin Ngah Talib (C’60, Mohd Shah) on his appointment as the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Malaya.
He was born and raised in the rural area of Pasir Salak, Perak. His birth place has great historical and personal significance as it was where both his great grandfather, Tok Anjang Pelita and his great great grandfather, Dato’ Sagor, Dato Maharaja Lela together with other Malay warriors rebelled against the British occupation in Malaya following the demise of Mr. J. Description
The main point of interest is, of course, the Malays - a people of contention, whose character has often been questioned, their achievements doubted and disputed, but as is shown by the writer, in his essays, are often judged with the prejudice of colonialists or merely detractors (including the Malays themselves). However, the book highlights the many qualities of the people, their states, systems of administrations and justice. And not to forget, the refined features of the people, as is often referred to by colonial administrators who have lived close to the heat of their dynamic courtesy, civility and grace.
