Thomas Adès studied piano at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, and read music at King’s College, Cambridge. A prodigious composer, conductor and pianist, Adès was described by the New York Times in 2007 as one of today’s ‘most accomplished overall musicians.’
Adès’s chamber opera Powder Her Face (1995) has been performed worldwide whilst The Tempest (2004) was commissioned by London’s Royal Opera House and has since been taken up by international houses including New York’s Metropolitan Opera, where it was recorded for a Deutsche Grammophon DVD which subsequently won a Grammy Award. Adès’s third opera, after Luis Buñuel’s The Exterminating Angel, premiered at the Salzburg Festival in July 2016 before travelling to London, New York and Copenhagen.

Born in London in 1971, composer, conductor and pianist Thomas Adès studied piano at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and music at King's College Cambridge.
His chamber opera Powder Her Face (1995) has been performed worldwide, while The Tempest (2004), commissioned and premiered by London's Royal Opera House, has since been revived by numerous international houses. His third opera, based on Luis Buñuel's L'Ange exterminateur, premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2016, before being presented in London, New York, Copenhagen and Paris. In 2021, Dante, his first score written specifically for dance, premiered as part of The Dante Project at London's Royal Opera House.
Between 1993 and 1995, Thomas Adès was associate composer with the Hallé Orchestra, producing These Premises Are Alarmed for the opening of Bridgewater Hall in 1996. Thomas Joseph Edmund AdèsCBE (born 1 March 1971) is a British composer, pianist and conductor. Five compositions by Adès received votes in the 2017 Classic Voice poll of the greatest works of art music since 2000: The Tempest (2004), Violin Concerto (2005), Tevot (2007), In Seven Days (2008), and Polaris (2010).[1]
Biography
Adès was born in London to art historian Dawn Adès and poet Timothy Adès. His surname is of Syrian Jewish origin.[2] Adès is gay and identified his sexuality closely with the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in his youth.[3]
Adès studied piano with Paul Berkowitz and later composition with Robert Saxton at Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. After attending University College School, he achieved a double starred first in 1992 at King's College, Cambridge, studying with Alexander Goehr and Robin Holloway.[4] He was appointed Britten Professor of Composition in the Roy
