A Bleak Thanksgiving

At Key Life, everything we write, record, and prepare for posting on the website must be done in advance.

And that’s true of what I’m writing here. Often, someone will comment on a broadcast I’ve done or something I’ve written, and I won’t even remember what it was about. I have trouble remembering what I did and said a week ago, so remembering it from two months ago is a real struggle.

We’re in good company. Everything God does is done in advance . . . way in advance. It’s another subject, but God even considers the prayers we pray before we are born. What? God isn’t bound by time and space. So, past, present, and future are irrelevant to God. He hears the prayers of Moses, Paul, you and your children, and your great-grandchildren before those prayers are ever prayed within the time continuum in which we live.

We’ll talk about that another time, but it’s November and Thanksgiving. But what I wrote above is connected to what I’m writing now. Last week, Matt Heard (one of Key Life’s voices) and I recorded the Key Life broadcasts for Thanksgiving week. But,

Early in 2013, at the age of 88, Dr. DeBrine had a fall and broke his hip.  At that time, he had been mentoring a young man, Adam Miller, who was working as Songtime’s office manager.  Adam stepped into the role, believing it to be temporary, but it soon became evident that John would be unable to continue broadcasting full time, and he began doing only the weekend programs.  Adam has become the new “voice” of Songtime, as John took on the role of President Emeritus with a supporting and advisory role.

Songtime moved to Cape Cod in the 1980’s and worked out of a building on Attuck’s Lane in Hyannis.  As time went on, the operation moved to Route 6A in Yarmouth Port, downtown Hyannis and now in Centervil

Barnstable - Dr. John D. DeBrine, long time resident of Barnstable, MA and founder of Songtime Radio, passed away peacefully in his sleep on March 3, 2021 at the age of 96.

John was born in the outskirts of Rochester, NY on January 15, 1925 and grew up as an only child. He was a graduate of Houghton College, earned a communication degree from Boston University, and was granted an honorary doctorate for his lifelong work in Christian Radio. He served as the pastor of Ruggles Street Baptist Church when he founded Youthtime, a Saturday night rally for teens in downtown Boston. Having an affinity for radio, John would establish a broadcast called Songtime and host it for 50 years. It can still be heard daily throughout New England and the Northeast on various stations.

Although he never married or had any children, John was devoted to those who looked to him as a leader. His wit and wisdom were a mark of his charming personality as he ended each broadcast with, "Grow in grace, so you won't groan in disgrace."
