Jerome A. Hines (November 8, 1921 – February 4, 2003) was an American operaticbass who performed at the Metropolitan Opera from 1946 to 1987. Standing 6'6", his stage presence and stentorian voice made him ideal for such roles as Sarastro in The Magic Flute, Mephistopheles in Faust, Ramfis in Aida, the Grand Inquisitor in Don Carlos, the title role of Boris Godunov and King Mark in Tristan und Isolde.[1]
Early life and education
Hines was born Jerome Albert Link Heinz in Hollywood. He studied mathematics and chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, while also studying voice with Vladimir Rosing.
Music
Hines made his operatic debut at the San Francisco Opera in 1941 as Monterone in Rigoletto. He changed his surname to Hines at the suggestion of his manager Sol Hurok to avoid the anti-German feelings prevalent during World War II.[2]

Jerome Hines, basso, died on February 4, 2003 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York City after complications from a hiatal hernia and a ruptured abscess. He was 81 years old. Known as one of the great basses of the century, he held the record for the longest solo career at the Metropolitan Opera—41 years. He also held the Met record for performances of several roles including Sarastro in Zauberflote—55 performances, and Ramfis in Aida—104 performances. He had a huge repertory of over 80 roles and was known in particular for the title roles in Boris Goudonov and Don Giovanni as well as “Mephistopheles” in Faust, Colline in La Boheme, Basilio in Barbiere di Siviglia, Gremin in Yevgeny Onegin, and a number of Wagner roles including Wotan, King Marke and Gurnemanz.

Lekcje śpiewu pobierał u Gennaro Curciego[1][2]. Na scenie zadebiutował w 1941 roku w San Francisco w pobocznej roli Hrabiego Monterone w RigoletcieGiuseppe Verdiego[1][2]. Od 1944 do 1946 roku związany był z operą w Nowym Orleanie[2]. W 1946 roku otrzymał nagrodę im.
