Why Have a Festival of Silence? -NEERJA DASANI & KRISH RAGHAV At the end of the eleven-day theatrical journey offered us by the MetroPlus Theatre Fest (2nd to 12th August) in Chennai, we find ourselves questioning the nature of our experience. Though the bouquet (“buffet” according to the MC) of twelve plays did set us thinking, stimulating new ideas, we were unprepared for the post-performance silence and the vacuity of debate / discussion within which the festival was conducted. Theatre depends for its energy on the chemistry between the actors and the audiences. A play does not cease to exist at the end of the performance; it continues to play with our minds long after the curtain falls. In that sense, theatre is a shared community experience and uniquely provides a space where the barriers between artists and audiences can be minimised. Mrinalini Sarabhai
Mrinalini Sarabhai (Hindi: मृणालिनी साराभाई; 11 May 1918 – 21 January 2016) was an Indian classical dancer, choreographer and instructor. She was the founder of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts in the city of Ahmedabad. She received many awards and citations in recognitions of her work to art. She trained over 18,000 students in Bharatnatyam and Kathakali. She was born in Kerala, India. She was married to renowned physicist Vikram Sarabhai.
Sarabhai was hospitalized in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India for pneumonia on 20 January 2016. She died the next day of respiratory failure at the age of 97.[1]

Indian classical dancer
Mrinalini Vikram Sarabhai (11 May 1918 – 21 January 2016) was an Indian classical dancer, choreographer and instructor. She was the founder and director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, an institute for imparting training in dance, drama, music and puppetry, in the city of Ahmedabad.[2] She received Padma Bhushan in 1992 and Padma Shri in 1965. She also received many other citations in recognition of her contribution to art.

Early life and education
Mrinalini was born to a Tamil Brahmin father and MalayaliNair mother[3] in present-day Kerala on 11 May 1918.[4] Her father was Subbarama Swaminathan, a distinguished lawyer with degrees from Harvard and London Universities, who practised criminal law at Madras High Court and was later made Principal of the Madras Law College.[5] Her mother was her father's Sambandham partner (and later wife) A.V. Ammukutty, better known as Ammu Swaminathan, a social worker, an independence activist, and later a parliamentari
