Barua hails from Bakata, Sibsagar in Assam. He was born in October 17, 1952 and was brought up along with his seven brothers and three sisters by his father Debeswar Barua and Mother Gunabati Barua. Barua did his post-graduation diploma in Film Direction from Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune after completing his graduation from B. Barooah College in Guwahati. He is married to Gayatri Barua who is also a filmmaker and they have a son named Oju.
Barua started his career as an Assistant Director to Aruna-Vikas in Mumbai for the film 'Shaque' and directed many short films before moving in to direct full length commercial films. Later he worked as a television producer in Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO)

Jahnu Barua on fighting the good fight: ‘It has been quite a struggle, but a good struggle’
Eminent Assamese director and 12-time National Film Award winner Jahnu Barua is known for his socially conscious cinema. Over the last 40 years, Barua has made 13 films in Assamese and one in Hindi. His most well-regarded movies include Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (The Catastrophe) and Hkhagoroloi Bohu Door (It’s a Long Way to the Sea). In an interview, the 69-year-old director spoke about the challenges facing independent cinema, his upcoming Hindi movie, and the influence of his mother on his films. Here are edited excerpts.
Assamese directors have been in the news of late, such as Aimee Baruah’s ‘Semkhor’ (in the Dimasa language) and Reema Das’s ‘Village Rockstars’ and ‘Bulbul Can Sing’. How do you see contemporary cinema from the North-East?

Jahnu Barua (born 1952) is an Indian film director. He has written and directed a number of Assamese and Hindi films. Some of his notable films are Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (1987), Firingoti (1992), Xagoroloi Bohu Door (1995), Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara (2005), Konikar Ramdhenu (2003), Baandhon (2012), and Ajeyo (2014).
Jahnu Barua has been conferred Padma Shri (2003) and Padma Bhushan (2015). He served as chairman of the Indian Film Directors' Association in 1993.[1]
