Ron Stallworth was the first African American police officer and detective hired by the Colorado Springs Police Department. He also holds the distinction of being the only African American “member” of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
Stallworth was born on June 18, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois, but was raised in El Paso, Texas. He graduated from Austin High School in 1971. The family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado in the summer of 1972. He became a cadet in the Fort Carson, Colorado police department on November 13, 1972. He became the first African-American member of the Colorado Springs police department and was sworn in on June 18, 1974, his twenty-first birthday.
Ron Stallworth spent two years in uniform before becoming the youngest undercover agent in the department. He received his first assignment in April 1975 when former Black Panther Party leader Stokely Carmichael (Kwame Ture) came to speak at a local nightclub. Johnny Lee Stallworth (born July 15, 1952) is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver for 14 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He played college football for the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, and was the Steelers' fourth-round draft pick in 1974. Stallworth played in six AFC championships, and went to four Super Bowls, winning all four. His career statistics included 537 receptions for 8,723 yards and 63 touchdowns. Ron Stallworth (born June 18, 1953) is an American retired police officer who infiltrated the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in the late 1970s. He was the first African-American detective in the Colorado Springs Police Department.[1][2]
In the 2018 film BlacKkKlansman, which depicts his infiltration of the Ku Klux Klan, Stallworth is portrayed by John David Washington.
Early life
Stallworth was born in Chicago, Illinois, on June 18, 1953. He grew up in El Paso, Texas, after his mother moved the family there. In his autobiography, he said of the move "My mother moving our family to El Paso was the best decision she ever made, as it was a far cry from the poverty, gangs, and conflict in [Chicago's] South Side, where I would have come of age if she had not left."[3]
Stallworth graduated from Austin High School in 1971, where he was both a member of the student council, and of a district-wide advisory board
