American football player and politician (born 1971)

Joseph Heath Shuler (born December 31, 1971) is an American former politician and professional footballquarterback who served as the U.S. representative for North Carolina's 11th congressional district from 2007 to 2013. The district covers the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina. A member of the Democratic Party, he played in the National Football League (NFL) for five seasons prior to his political career. Shuler played college football at the University of Tennessee, where he was named SEC Player of the Year, and was selected by the Washington Redskins third overall in the 1994 NFL draft. Unable to match his collegiate success, he was traded from the Redskins after three seasons and spent his final two with the New Orleans Saints.

Joseph Heath Shuler started his football career in Bryson City, North Carolina where he became a standout quarterback and led his team to two state championships. He was eventually named North Carolina High School Player of the Year; and then went on to have a shining career at the University of Tennessee where he gained national attention as one of SEC’s top quarterbacks. Shuler scored a school record 11 rushing TDs in 1992, a mark still atop the Tennessee charts for a quarterback. The next season, he became a legend with 2,354 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, leading the Tennessee Volunteers to an appearance in the Citrus Bowl. Overall, he passed for more than 4,000 career yards and set numerous Tennessee passing records.

Shuler was the 1993 Heisman Trophy runner-up, was selected first team All-SEC and was named SEC Player of the Year and finalist for the Davy O’Brien and Maxwell Awards.

Heath Shuler is a former NFL quarterback who played in the NFL for four seasons. Prior to his time in the NFL, Shuler was a highly recruited quarterback out of high school who won two North Carolina championships. Shuler decided on attending the University of Tennessee on an athletic scholarship, and he became one of the schools top quarterbacks in history, setting almost every passing record at the University of Tennessee. In 1993, Shuler finished second in Heisman Trophy race behind FSU QB Charlie Ward. Shuler entered the 1994 NFL Draft and was selected by the Washington Redskins with the third overall pick. After a long contract negotiation, Shuler signed with the Redskins on a seven year deal, and was seen as the Redskins’ QB of the future. Shuler would struggle in the NFL, and would eventually be benched in favor of Gus Frerotte in 1996. Right after, Shuler was traded to the New Orleans Saints, but injuries would prevent him from playing a full season.
