He was married to Catherine Mazuru who died in 1996 after which he re-married Patricia and Ntombizodwa Chingaira.

It is three weeks now since we laid him to rest. I was too emotional about his passing away to write about him before now.

The death of a great musician can create a collective sense of loss and nostalgia. It gives the feeling that an era has passed. It is in this regard that I pay my tribute to Comrade Chinx to honour and remember him for his contribution not only to this vibrant form of expression which we call music, but also for his role in the liberation of Zimbabwe.

Chingaira's son Lenin was part of the Urban Grooves group Slice. Cde Chinx had two other sons Panashe and Sagelaw and a daughter named Zealdine.[1]

In August 2019, his son Sagelaw Chingaira was killed in a hit and run accident aged 26. The unnamed driver did not stop at the scene of the accident in Greencroft, Harare but eventually handed herself to the police a day later. Sagelaw was poised to take over his late father’s band. He was employed by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services.[2][3]

Chingaira attended Chigora Primary School in the Makoni District of Rusape.

Music Career Before Independence

His interest in music began when his primary school headmaster, Martin Dhlamini, encouraged him to sing and to join the school choir. Upon completing his secondary school, Chingaira got a place to study medicine overseas but he failed to acquire travel documents and the whole plan failed to materialise. Then in 1974 he worked at an engineering plant in Msasa, in Harare.

Dickson Chingaira Makoni was a revolutionary musician and songwriter from Zimbabwe who was popularly known by his fans as Comrade (or Cde) Chinx. Chinx is short for Chingaira. He was born on 27 September 1955 in Rusape and died on 18 June 2017. He rose to fame with songs such as ‘Africa’, ‘Hondo Yeminda’ and ‘Mabhunu’.

He attended Chigora Primary School in the Makoni District of Rusape. His passion for music started when he was in primary school. His headmaster, Martin Dhlamini, advised him to sing and to join the school choir. Upon completing his secondary school, he got a place to study medicine overseas. Efforts to acquire travel documents hit a snag and he ended up working at an engineering plant in Msasa, Harare.

In 1975, he joined the Second Chimurenga war in Mozambique. His love for music prompted him to become a full-time organiser of the Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) People’s Choir. They established choir called Takawira. This was in honour of the late nationalist Leopold Takawira. The choir heightened morale of freedom fighters
