Duong Bich Lien – A silent lightning of Vietnam fine arts

Duong Bich Lien (1924-1988) is one of Vietnam's four great painters (along with Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Nguyen Sang, and Bui Xuan Phai). Of this quartet, he was the quietest member, but produced outstanding works of art that have greatly enriched the nation's fine arts. July 17, 2024 will be the 100th anniversary of his birth.

Strange faith of a painting

Among Hanoi's intellectual elite in the 1970s, Duong Bich Lien was a gifted and well-known figure. He received high praise for his depiction of the army's trenches during the War of Resistance, called Hao (The Tunnel), which he completed in late 1972 during the days when the U.S. was heavily bombing the nation's capital.

As his friend, the scholar Nguyen Hao Hai, recalled, the writer Nguyen Tuan and the musician Van Cao both admired Lien and the painting, which is a rare large-format oil painting on canvas, measuring 1.47 meters by 2 meters.

Bhiksuni Dr. Bich Lien is diligent and brilliant! She was born in Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam and came to the USA as a child. She established herself with dignity and beauty. She began to share her cultural pride in 1986 in Kansas and won the Traditional Vietnamese Dress Award. By 2012 she won the USA Miss Asia International Competition honoring the beauty, talent, wisdom and traditional cultural values of thousands of competitors from 58 countries.

During this period, she created international cosmetics companies EV Princess, BL Miracle, and Herbs EV, with distribution to 15 nations, as well as, beauty salons. Her diligence as a Woman Entrepreneur earned her the respect of American Presidents: George W. Bush and Barack Obama who both invited her to events at the White House.

Next, she established the Bich Lien Charity Foundation to empower Vietnamese people in both the USA and Vietnam who are facing hunger, poverty, or difficulties.

Biography of Duong Bich Lien

Duong Bich Lien (1924-1988), was born in Ha Noi, Vietnam, in a family of intellectuals and mandarins. He was the second son (he had a brother and a sister and a brother). His hometown was in Phu Thi village, Khoai Chau district (now Phu Thi village, Me So commune, Van Giang district, Hung Yen province). His family in Khoai Chau has a tradition of studiousness.
Born in a wealthy and powerful family, until the age of 17, he became interested in art, and had the desire to give up the rich life to follow the dusty life.
Duong Bich Lien decided to enroll at Indochina Fine Arts College. From here, he started his painting career.

Duong Bich Lien’s Career

Duong Bich Lien was one of the last students of Indochina Fine Arts College. He studied at the Faculty of Painting, class XVIII (1944-1945). In 1946, Duong Bich Lien and many Hanoi intellectuals and artists participated in the resistance war against the French.
