John Roy "Johnny" Van Zant (born February 27, 1959) is an Americanmusician. He is the lead vocalist of the band Lynyrd Skynyrd.[1]

Van Zant was born in Jacksonville, Florida. He is the younger brother of the late Lynyrd Skynyrd co-founder and former lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, and of the .38 Special founder, Donnie Van Zant.

    While the rest of the world was listening to Ronnie VanZant of Lynyrd Skynyrd or his brother Donnie VanZant of 38 Special, a third brother, also extremely talented, was waiting in the wings.

    Maybe it is coincidence that three of the most talented singers and songwriters of the era have rhyming names; maybe not. But the fact remains that Ronnie, Donnie, and Johnny VanZant are all three extremely talented individuals. Johnny watched the success of his brothers and determined to follow in their footsteps.

    In 1980, Johnny burst onto the music scene with the release of No More Dirty Deals, a hard driving, Southern Rock album. Johnny had assembled another unique array of talent in the form of Robbie Gay and Eric Lief Lundgren on guitar, Danny Clausman on bass guitar, and Robbie Morris on drums and percussion. It was an amazing demonstration of talent, but the world took only minor notice. Southern Rock was being dominated by 38 Special, Molly Hatchet, and the Lynyrd Skynyrd spin-off bands.

He is the youngest brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd founder and vocalist Ronnie Van Zant and .38 Special founder and vocalist Donnie Van Zant. He has been the lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd since its reformation in 1987.

    Van Zant performed during the 1970s with his 1st band, The Austin Nickels Band. They later changed their name to The Johnny Van Zant Band releasing their debut solo album, No More Dirty Deals, in 1980. Original members of The Johnny Van Zant Band consisted of Johnny Van Zant on lead vocals, Robbie Gaye, on guitar, Danny Clausman, on bass, Eric Lundgren, lead-guitar, Robbie Morris, drums and Joan Hecht (previously Joan Cusumano) and Nancy Henderson on background vocals. Johnny Van Zant released three more solo albums between 1981 and 1985, before taking a break from the music business.

    He became lead vocalist for the reunited Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1987, and continues to record and perform with them today. He released another solo album, Brickyard Road, in 1990. He also
