Jerick Hoffer, The Lady Who Lunches
Every time I see Jerick Hoffer, I’m surprised by how tall they are. Perhaps their soft-spoken, almost demure demeanor makes me think they’re shorter than they really are.
I met Jerick more than a year ago when I’d asked them to host an Academy Awards fundraiser as their drag alter ego, Jinkx Monsoon. I had seen Jinkx perform and had been blown away by her voice and charisma. Meeting Jerick, then, and seeing how quiet, almost shy, they were came as quite a surprise. Jerick is friendly, though, and thoughtful. We’re hardly close friends, but we always hug when we greet each other. Today is no exception.
They started by apologizing for being late. “Now that I’m drawing my eyebrows on, it’s important that I get them right,” they explained. “I don’t think I did this time,” they laughed.

Jinkx Monsoon
Jerick Hoffer, better known by the stage name Jinkx Monsoon, is an American drag performer, actor, comedian and singer who came to international attention by winning the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race. They returned to compete in the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars. Their first studio album, "The Inevitable Album," was released in 2014, followed by their second studio album, "The Ginger Snapped," in 2018. In June 2019, a panel of judges from New York magazine placed Monsoon 18th on their list of "the most powerful drag queens in America", a ranking of 100 former Drag Race contestants.
As early as 2006, Hoffer appeared as the lead dancer in the worldâs largest drag queen chorus line, which made the Guinness Book of World Records. By 2012, they had advanced to roles in Seattle theaters, playing Moritz in âSpring Awakeningâ (produced by Balagan Theatre) and Angel in âRENTâ (produced by The 5th Avenue Theatre). In 2013, Hoffer played Hedwig in âHedwig and the Angry Inchâ.

In an April 2017 interview, Hoffer stated, “I’ve never identified as fully male. I’ve always identified as more gender fluid or gender ambiguous, but I never knew the vocabulary to explain it for myself.” Hoffer identifies as “non-gendered” or non-binary, and goes by singular ‘they’ pronouns when not in drag.
Born on 18th September, 1987, in Portland, Oregon, their first performance in drag was at the age of 16 years. They worked as a janitor during college, and graduated with a BFA in theater from Cornish College of the Arts in 2010. They then settled in Seattle, Washington.
Their most famous appearance was in season five on Ru Paul’s Drag Race, and Ru Paul describes Jinkx as “a stage left, off center kind of quality.”
