At 62, Robert Aubry Davis makes his debut at Signature in cha-cha heels
“Here. Feel these. I don’t know how women do it,” says Robert Aubry Davis, offering me a squeeze of his size 54 EEE breasts—each one roughly the pendulous shape and heft of a Hubbard squash, but actually fashioned from bags of millet.
Mr. Davis has to strap on these babies eight times a week, along with cha-cha heels, skyscraper wigs, and false eyelashes thicker than a woolly caterpillar. At the age of 62, Mr. Davis is throwing over the hoity-toity world of classical music and opera commentary to make his professional theatrical debut as Edna Turnblad, the housebound Baltimore “Hon” who bursts out of her shell with the help of her terpsichorean, plus-sized daughter Tracy in the John Waters musical Hairspray that plays at Signature Theater through Jan 29.

Television and radio personality Robert Aubry Davis is a native Washingtonian and an active member of the area's cultural community. Davis is the creator and host of "Millennium of Music," a program dedicated to music from the thousand years before Bach. The program is carried by more than 100 public radio stations nationwide. He has been host and moderator of WETA TV 26's Emmy Award-winning weekly arts discussion program, "Around Town," since its inception in 1986. Davis can also be heard on Vox, XM Satellite Radio's opera and classical vocal music channel. His education in literature and art history at both Duke University and American University and his broad knowledge of and participation in the arts make him a well-respected and visible member of Washington's cultural community. He is a regular lecturer at a variety of area seminars and performances and has written liner notes for a wide variety of classical and folk recordings. Robert has been awarded knighthoods by the Republic of France and the Kingdom of Belgium for service to the arts; and was named a Knight of the Order of the Lion by the Republic of Finland.
